Unlocking the Reasons Behind the Joint Disorder

TMJ, Longview

Temporomandibular joint disorder involves discomfort and tenderness, affecting the joint where the lower jawbone connects to either side of the skull. Aside from being painful, the condition interferes with everyday functions such as chewing, talking, and yawning. It is commonly referred to as TMJ disorder or TMD, and affects millions of Americans. We encourage all of our patients, whether they have been diagnosed with TMJ disorder in Longview or not, to understand the general causes and symptoms.

Dr. Jerry Winchell is well-versed in the most advanced TMJ treatments; he can additionally provide treatments for a broad range of other general and cosmetic dentistry conditions. Rest assured, the dentist and staff will make it their mission to provide the most appropriate, personalized dental care.

What Are the Causes of TMJ Disorder?

There is more than one possible cause for TMJ disorder. After a thorough evaluation at our Longview offices, Dr. Winchell may diagnose and determine the particular cause of the joint disorder, further enabling him to recommend the ideal course of treatment. Typically, people between the ages of 20 and 40 are affected, the majority of whom are women.

Common causes of TMJ disorder include:

  • Wearing and tearing of the cartilage disks that pad the temporomandibular joint can lead to the painful grinding of the jaw bone.
  • Dislocation of the joint may be marked by a kind of popping noise. This occurs when the jaw is opened or closed; it often affects the jaw’s functionality.
  • Habitually clenching and grinding teeth puts severe pressure on the joints, making it one of the likeliest causes of TMJ disorder. (It can also cause dislocation of the joint or cartilage wear and tear.)
  • If the bite of the upper and lower teeth is misaligned, routine jaw movement such as chewing can adversely affect the joint and muscles of the jaw, face, and neck. For this reason, jaw injury is a common cause.
  • Arthritis can cause the temporomandibular joint and surrounding tissues to be inflamed or swollen. It may also lead to a reduced ability to open and close the mouth.

What Are the Symptoms of TMJ Disorder?

Temporomandibular joint disorder affects each person differently, although there are common symptoms. You may have TMJ disorder if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Pain in the jaw or surrounding tissue, including ear
  • Jaw locking (open or closed)
  • Limited ability to open the mouth
  • Moderate or severe headaches
  • Tooth pain, which may also be felt in the cheeks
  • Bite feels uncomfortable or “off”
  • Neck, shoulder, or back pain
  • Swelling on the side of the face
  • A clicking or popping sound when opening the mouth
  • Dizziness
