Meet Dr. Winchell
Dr. Winchell’s journey into dentistry
began with a friend who’s father loved
dentistry and recognized in Jerry
Winchell someone who would love to work
with people and work with his hands. His
recommendation led Jerry into a field he
still loves today. Dr. Winchell’s desire
to learn from a school that treated
people as he felt they should be treated
led him to apply to only one school:
Loma Linda University School of
Dentistry whose motto "To Make Man
Whole" closely mirrors Dr. Winchell’s
personal drive to bring caring and
wholeness to people who’s lives he
touches. Though there were 2400
applicants for the 75 positions the
school offered he was accepted the first
year he applied. During his
undergraduate training he had a special
interest and experience in oral surgery
via participating in the "Special Senior
Surgical Training" in oral surgery. Upon
completion of his training he obtained
his doctorate in dental surgery.
Launching the Practice
Choosing the beautiful Southwest
Washington area he chose to settle in
Longview, Washington, sister city to
Kelso, Washington, not far from
Portland, Oregon and less than an hour
from Astoria and Seaside.. He moved from
Loma Linda with his wife to the
Northwest where they have lived for the
past 30 years and raised two children.
As a Person
Born and raised in Ohio, Dr. Winchell
fell in love with the Northwest while
attending college in Walla Walla,
Washington where he graduated with a
B.S. in Biology. In addition to his
interest in science his mechanical mind
loves to create and design and his
artistic eye melds his skills into areas
such as working with exotic woods. His
interest in young people has led him
through years of working with teenagers
and young adults in a variety of
settings–everything from church to paint
ball to backpacking.. The interest in
helping people and working with young
adults has led to Dr. Winchell’s
providing dental clinics for people in
third world countries and helping in
building projects with young adults. His
love of a challenge led Dr. Winchell and
his son into the field of high powered
rockets. This led them to several
launches and an altitude record for the
class of rocket engine they used in the
design. His love for music involved him
and his wife in co- creating the Easter
musical "Let All Heaven Rejoice" now
known as "Journey to the Cross" where he
sang the part of the devil for several
years and then metamorphosed into an
angel in the heavenly choir (to the
amusement of the watching crowds). A
current passion of Dr. Winchell’s
involves facilitating a class entitled
"The Journey" where he sees huge
personal growth and life change in those
who attend.
Caring for People
In addition to being a general
dentist in 1993 Dr. Winchell became
a member of the prestigious American
Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry early
in the cosmetic revolution.. He is also
a member of the Lower Columbia Dental
Society and the Washington State
Dental Association as well as the
American Dental Association and the
Dental Organization for Conscious
Sedation. A highlight of what he
does is watching the change in people’s
lives when he creates a new smile for
them. "The transformation is amazing. It
really does change lives," he says.
"That’s what makes me get up in the
morning." He keeps his clinical skills
current through continuing education.
Amazingly, the majority of dental
schools do not teach cosmetic dentistry
so it requires education in cosmetic
dentistry beyond the traditional dental
schooling In the pursuit of excellence
in the field of cosmetics he has chosen
to study with a number of well-known
experts and institutes in the field
including Dr. Larry Rosenthal (who
created smiles for Denzel Washington,
Julia Roberts and Donald Trump), Dr.
William Dorfman (of Extreme Makeover
fame), The Las Vegas Institute, Dr.
William Baird, Dr. Rhys Spoor. The
American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
has been the nurturing ground for Dr.
Winchell’s constant growth and learning
in the latest advances in the field of
cosmetic/aesthetic dentistry.
